Letter to Roche

Dated: 10 August 94

Dear Sir/Madam,

I am writing to you to ask for information about one of your products, it is pyridostigmine bromide (Mestinon) as supplied to the UK MoD in 30mg tablets under product licence No 4537/0003.

First, please allow me to make it quite clear that I am not intent on making a litigation claim against you as the manufacturer of the above product, I am merely seeking the following information:

1. Can you supply a product data sheet for the above product.

2. In your opinion would it be wise to administer the following vaccines whilst taking pyridostigmine: anthrax, pertussis and plague.

3. I have heard a recent report that your company has made comment to the effect that anthrax should not have been administered at the same time as pyridostigmine, is this true and if so, is the statement scientifically based and would it be possible to have a copy of this statement and any supporting materiel.

I have asked the above questions because I served in the Gulf during the war and am now suffering with several unexplained symptoms. I am merely trying to build up a picture of the effect that this combination of drugs has had on my body.

I look forward to your reply with interest, and thankyou for your help.

Thankyou for your letter to the company, concerning MESTINON 30 mg tablets as supplied to the UK MoD.

I understand that your enquiry is rpompted by the persistence of several unexplained symptoms after serving in the Gulf War. As you are asking as a patient, I am obliged to say that any medical information on this subject can only be forwarded via your own doctor or pharmacist. Whilst we do not have a data sheet as such for MESTINON 30 mg presentation as used by the MoD, we do have a data sheet for MESTINON 60 mg tablets, which are used in the maniagement of patients with myasthenia gravis. I can also tell you that there is no special contra indication to the use of anthrax, pertussis or plague vaccines during treatment with MESTINON.

I trust this will be of some help, and that you will understand oour position in not being able to supply detailed medical information directly to yourself, as this is governed by the Code of Practice under which we operate in the Pharmaceutical industry.

Yours sincerely

David Robson
