Gulf veterans hand back awards

By Julia Llewellyn Smith

GULF war veterans marched on the Ministry of Defence yesterday and handed back the medals they won serving their country.

In an angry meeting with Lord Gilbert, the defence procurement minister, they demanded an independent inquiry into Gulf war syndrome, the name given to the wide variety of illnesses suffered by Servicemen.

The men and their families made their protest on the seventh anniversary of the start of Gulf war. They believe an inquiry would help their claims for compensation.

About 160 British veterans are said to have died; more than 6,000 are reported to be sick. The illnesses include chronic fatigue, skin disorders and shortness of breath. Vaccines and pesticides may have been to blame.

David Robertson, 38, said: "I'm very sad to be doing this. We were there when our country needed us; now all we're being offered is sympathy. We don't need that, we need justice."
